Gold Medal for The Eagle at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2023: A Letter From Peter Fogarty

Gold Medal for The Eagle at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2023: A Letter From Peter Fogarty

It is with great pleasure that we announce, Dalwhinnie's 2020 The Eagle Shiraz has been awarded a Gold Medal at the world’s most highly regarded wine event – Decanter World Wine Awards 2023.

Dalwhinnie's 2020 The Eagle Shiraz was awarded 95 points and was among the top 36 Shiraz wines in the world, and placed in the top 4% of all wines. It was also the only Shiraz from the Pyrenees to be awarded a Gold Medal in this year's show.

The Decanter World Wine Awards is the largest and most influential wine show in the world. This year judges from 30 countries reviewed 18,250 wines from across the globe with only 705 wines receiving a Gold Medal.

This marks the third consecutive year that Dalwhinnie's The Eagle Shiraz has been awarded a Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards. This is a testament to the iconic Eagle vineyard and our viticultural and winemaker's expertise.

Only 864 bottles of this world-class wine were produced, and although the 2020 The Eagle Shiraz is not due for release until September 2023, we are offering our loyal Dalwhinnie members the opportunity to secure a pre-order allocation.

This award has clearly put The Eagle back where it was in the late 90s – at the very top of the world’s most highly regarded Shiraz wines. To quote from Huon Hooke following a tasting of The Eagle against Henschke Hill of Grace, Penfolds Grange and other great Shiraz in the 90s:

“We all know it’s one of the country’s greatest, a statuesque red of exceptional concentration, power and balance. It achieves this without being propped up by American oak; indeed it is a subtly wooded wine in the context of Australian Shiraz. To play favourites is pointless; it all comes down to subjective preference for a style. But for me at least the Dalwhinnie leads the way. Sit back and watch, with glass and book in hand, as Dalwhinnie etches a name for itself, not only among the great wines of Australia, but the world.”

The 2020 vintage will likely be considered among the greatest Dalwhinnie wines ever produced; an iconic, long-living wine which will reward over the decades.

You will find a pre-order form below, which includes The Eagle Shiraz and other wines from the Dalwhinnie portfolio:

  • 2018, 2019 and 2020 The Eagle Shiraz
  • 2020 and 2021 The Pinnacle Shiraz

We have elected to do a dual-vintage release of The Eagle and The Pinnacle single vineyard wines, in a break with tradition, so that you can see the evolution of these incredible wines since we purchased Dalwhinnie. We expect that these single vineyard wines will sell out quickly, and as there are very limited quantities this will be the best opportunity to secure your allocation.

Our viticultural team, led by John Fogarty and Sam Bartlett, ensured that the fruit was handled to perfection, enabling Group Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy to weave his magic and produce these extraordinary single vineyard wines.

We hope you share our pride in seeing Dalwhinnie again receiving the recognition it so richly deserves.

Kind regards

Peter Fogarty
Executive Chairman
